There's a substantial history of camera technology being released to the public before the technology of post-production has caught up. HDV springs as an obvious example where the long-GOP structure was fantastically efficient for image acquisition and recording but presented considerable issues for non-linear editing systems traditionally reliant on individual frames and not groups-of-pictures. AVCHD presents the same issue where shooting is easy but timeline performance is less than stellar. And Sony's XDCAMEX is a great balance of quality and efficiency but it's wrapping in an Mp4 format initially gave many NLE's considerable trouble.

While 3D films have been around since at least the 1950s, the technique of creating 3D movies gets revisited quite often. Back in the mid 1990s at SIGGRAPH in New Orleans, Sony showed a 3D film at one of its after hours parties at the Aquarium, to the delight of all who were invited to screen it. At this year's NAB trade show in Las Vegas, all the major camera manufacturers were showcasing 3D displays and some had 3D camera demonstrations in their booths.

NAB 2009: JVC shows GY-HM100 digital cinema camcorder system By John Virata
At NAB 2009, JVC was showcasing the GY-HM100 digital cinema camcorder system. Priced at around $4000, the dual format camera records to standard Class 5 SDHC solid state memory cards to .mp4 on XDCAM EX and Apple's .mov file format. It can record to 35Mbps, 25Mbps, and 19Mbps. The camera can record in virtually all flavors of HD, including 1920 x 1080 (1080p24/25/30, 1080i), and 1280 x 720P (p60/50/30/25/24).
