'Vegas TV' Wins Big With TV Magic Upgrade to Digital

November 18, 2009 -- DMN Newswire--2009-11-18--Broadcast systems integrator TV Magic today announced that it has completed a digital upgrade for "Vegas TV," the independent low-power television station KTUD-LD (digital channel 25.1/cable channel 14) in Las Vegas. TV Magic provided integration and installation services to KTUD, first providing knowledgeable support and expertise in equipment selection and integration, and then supplying an experienced crew to finish the project smoothly and according to KTUD's budget and time frame.

"Because we run KTUD with a very small staff, sheer economics dictated that we bring in an outside integrator and skilled crew to execute our digital upgrade," said John Franz, chief engineer at KTUD. "The team at TV Magic has years of experience in the broadcast industry and valuable understanding of the systems that make up the latest nonlinear digital environments. As a result, we were able to make a transparent shift to digital operation using the right combination of equipment at the right price."

KTUD established an SD-SDI infrastructure in 2006 with a new facility build-out. For this upgrade, Franz provided TV Magic with an initial plan and proceeded to work with the company's engineering team to refine the system design and define an equipment list. Once the project was underway, TV Magic integrated KTUD's existing systems with a new digital STL/TSL microwave and transmitter previously purchased by the station. TV Magic also installed a patch bay, ran new cabling to existing distribution and monitoring equipment, and added new cables as needed.

To enable KTUD's digital broadcast, TV Magic installed new equipment including encoders and MUX, Demod/IRDs, redundant ASI-to-SMPTE310 converters, an ASI interfaced stream analyzer package, a PSIP generator, and a variety of distribution equipment. By carefully planning the orchestration of equipment, cabling, and IP addresses, integration was quick and virtually transparent. Special attention was paid to compliant PSIP and functional Ethernet structure maintaining KTUD's commitment to technical quality and documentation.

"As an independent low-power station, KTUD doesn't have the same engineering, equipment, and labor resources that are typically available to larger stations," said Stephen Milley, vice president of sales at TV Magic. "We were able to work closely with John, almost as an extension of his staff, to understand his requirements and to help the station achieve a smooth, cost-effective transition to digital broadcasting."
